Two New Ice Cream Books! A novel and a cookbook!

Each summer I look forward to ice cream. Now, I happen to love ice cream year-round, but it’s extra special in the summer. Since beginning this blog a few years back, I’ve picked an ice cream book (or two) to review each summer as well. So, here are 2018’s ice cream books.

The Ice-Cream Makers: A Novel


In a certain region of Italy there is a band of brothers–the men and their families who spend “the season” from March to October making and selling ice cream across Europe. For Giovani’s family the location of their shop is Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Growing up Giovanni and brother Luca would spend part of the year in boarding school, part at home in Italy with their parents and then the summer the family would be together in the ice cream shop. This was truly a family enterprise–as it was for the other Italian ice cream familes. The shop was to be passed from father to son. Giovanni, though, loved poetry and, amazingly, he got his way and left the shop to run an international poetry festival. Brother Luca, though, had to stay and make ice cream.

What goes on in a family when tradition is ignored or refuted?

My Thoughts:

What a compelling story! I didn’t realize it was fiction! It was so believable, so true-to-life. I fell in love with grouchy Beppi, his long-suffering wife, the two sons and daughter-in-law Sophia at the first word. The very first word.

  1. Really fun post idea for summer! The Italian ice cream novel sounds great. Did they really call it ice cream, though? When I’ve been to Italy, it’s all about the gelato. I have too many not-too-fond memories of “making ice cream” at 4-H and Girls Club events by shaking baggies of salt and whatever to ever try it for real, unfortunately 🙂

  2. Both sound very interesting!
    I also love ice cream all year round and have managed to make some which tasted pretty good, too. (But froze through so was far harder to eat than usual ice cream.) I’m always looking for more neat recipes to try out.
